Experiential Leadership and Teambuilding

Challenge: Laing O’Rourke have been contracted to renovate the 1,000 acre Gaydon Triangle for Jaguar Landrover (JLR). The challenge was to provide the opportunity for Laing O’Rourke (including its sub-contractors) and Jaguar Landrover’s staff to begin the process of becoming a high performing team. The group totalled 69 and within its number were MDs, directors, designers, architects, planners, structural engineers, digital engineers, steelwork specialists to name a few. Waves Training Solutions Ltd was selected to provide a Five Behaviours of a Cohesive Team facilitator to help design the programme and 2 to facilitate on the day.

Solution: Led by the LOR Head of Leadership and Management Development, the solution was arrived at through understanding the Project Director’s vision for the team and what could realistically be achieved in a single intervention.

The day revolved around the central tenets of the Five Behaviours of a Cohesive Team, the Drama Triangle and an emphasis on teamwork. After an initial brief about the key models and expectations for the day and beyond, the group was split into 4 teams. Each team was given tasks to complete, the success of which had implications for the afternoon’s session.

In the afternoon the whole group was tasked to produce a scale model of the new JLR buildings and landscape using cardboard and other sundry materials.

Results: The Project Director and JLR senior leadership team gained a valuable insight into the strengths, areas for development and character of the whole team. New friendships and understanding were forged and superficial ones taken to the next level through being exposed to challenging activities and being able to spend more time together outside the pressures of work. Despite not completing the model, the process of moving from a potential team to a high performing team was well and truly begun and people had a great deal of fun.
